This paper series elaborates the global challenge, future visions, and strategic directions. Author John Stutz is a Senior Fellow at the Tellus Institute. The unifying theme in all of his work has been the impact of consumption on individual well-being, the economy, and the environment. He has conducted numerous studies of the economics and job impacts of conservation investment compared to conventional resource-intensive alternatives. He has appeared as an expert witness on energy matters throughout the U.S. and Canada. He has also studied the economic and environmental benefits of waste prevention strategies for the U.S. government agencies, the OECD and others. Before joining Tellus in 1976, he was on the faculty of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the State University of New York at Albany, where he received tenure, and Fordham University. He holds a doctorate in mathematics from Princeton University. In 1930, as the Great Depression was beginning, John Maynard Keynes wrote an essay, Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren (Keynes, 1963).
